Education for excellence
ALOA works hard to provide the best quality education possible by offering over 200 full day instructor led training classes through regionally sponsored classes, at the annual ALOA Convention & Security Expo and through the ALOA Training Center.
Through the ALOA Scholarship Foundation, entry level locksmiths can apply for training assistance.
ALOA conducts training to achieve certification in many different formats that include over 100 classes at the annual ALOA Convention at contracted regional conventions and at many locally sponsored weekend seminars throughout the year. A schedule of ALOA certified class presentations is on our website. ALOA also provides a bookstore where members can purchase books CD’s and videotapes on a wide variety of locksmith subjects. ALOA members can check out videotapes from the ALOA Video Library. We are currently in the process of developing several additional distance-learning opportunities as well. ALOA also maintains a list of schools that offer correspondence, resident and traveling resident training.
ALOA has certified over 4,000 locksmiths nationwide with an additional 2,900 who are presently in the early stages of certification. ALOA provides the licensing exam for the State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation, the North Carolina Locksmith Licensing Board and has worked with other city and state agencies in setting up their qualifications for locksmith hiring and requirements for licensing.

ALOA Fundamentals of Locksmithing (AFL) NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE
ALOA’s Fundamentals of Locksmithing (AFL) Program is a great starting point if you are new to locksmithing or is a good refresher; especially if you are studying for the PRP exam. This class provides you with a basic hands-on knowledge of locks and security-related hardware. The information provided in the courses can lead you to an apprentice position in which you can further your understanding of our history-filled, future securing, personally satisfying security industry. You will be receiving a lab box in the mail with tools and hardware for applied exercises. All of this is yours to keep.
This online series is the same as the ALOA AFL instruction held in Dallas at the National ALOA office 4 times a year and once a year at our National Convention. The online courses are a great alternative to the 6-day classroom course, as the courses can be taken online at your own pace. At the conclusion of the online instruction, you will arrange a single, one-day session with a professional in a live setting in your region of the country to finish your practicum and take the final exam.
Designed to minimize the out-of-office time for students, this course series still provides the quality training experience you've come to expect from ALOA through the years.
Students will take an online course of study, followed by a 1-day, hands-on practical class in their region. The new online option will allow students to take the online course at their own pace and spend only 1 day out of the office at a nearby location, thus minimizing travel expenses and almost eliminating time out of the office! The exam is also given online.
After enrollment, students will be mailed their course kit which will contain the tools, pinning kit, locks and other hardware needed to complete the online study. During the course, students will also have access to online webinars for Q&A from ALOA staff members and trainers. This ensures all students have the support needed to successfully complete the course.
